The best 4x6" LED Headlights for 2023 by Pro Vision Lighting Australia

Coming into 2023 there is one 4x6 Inch LED Headlight that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

I call it The Terminator!

Have a look at the specifications and details here ->

4x6" Terminator LED Headlights

The reason I want to plug these lights is that they are absolute beasts and virtually indestructible.

Most of my professional drivers are now getting these and the results are fantastic.

A quick tip for setting them up is to use the H4 H/L plug as a multi-functional system to set them up in a High/Low position however you want. For example; Car users generally have 4x lights across the front of the vehicle in the 4x6", like some of the 60 series Toyota Landcruisers, old Chryslers, Trucks like some Kenworth, quad bikes, etc... And the best way to set them up is to only have low beam hooked up on the outer lights and then hook them up so that when you hit high beam all the 4x lights are on High + Low.

Ok, so i get a lot of questions about legalities, and I have done a whole separate blog about Asymmetrical headlamps and Symmetrical headlamp differences here ->

Are LED headlights Legal?

An important aspect of the terminator is the light spread, or the area of light being covered, and the quality of that light. What I mean is that some led headlamps have bad light coverage that is scattered and distracting. The great thing about the Terminator 4x6 is that it has precision-engineered projector lenses that maximize the spread of light forward and to the sides in a way that is uniform and easy on the eye.

Another issue with led headlights and/or some vehicle electrical systems is that they can get bad radio interference, or, the computers in the vehicle do not like the lower resistance of led lights and can cause errors or warning lights. A high-quality led headlight should have a measure of Electro Magnetic Compatibility, (EMC), and Controller Area Network compatibility, (Can-bus), this will alleviate most older analog systems and more digitized systems compatibility errors. The terminator 4x6 inch has the latest in advanced electrical engineering so as to minimize problems poor led headlamps can generate.

***Cheap Tip: Your auto electrician can make up  the difference between the resistance of a filament  (amp current draw) with a 50 cent Resistor, and radio suppressors cost a penny as well ;)

The advantage of using LED over halogen, or HID, is that halogen filaments break, HID are too harsh on the eyes and have too many moving parts, (such as ballasts and ignitors), whereas high-quality custom made LED's for headlamps are low glare/high brightness, and have 100x the life of halogen and more than 10x the life of HID.

if you really need to get better lighting i would suggest getting the Terminator 4x6 inch led headlight replacements, you won't be disappointed.

Tips for Fitting LED Headlights.

Most led headlights come with an H4 High/Low connector. For vehicles where they have 2x inner lights, and 2x outer lights, you will generally get your auto electrician to hook up the outer lights on low beam only, and then when you hit the high beam, all 4x lights have the Low + High beam activated.

When you buy any led headlights, they are generally “actively switched”. This means that even though they have a normal H4 H/L connector on them, it does not mean the vehicle is “actively” switched. Old Toyota Hilux and Landcruisers are famous for having earth-switched systems.

Earth switched means instead of your cars h4 connector having an earth (ground) terminal, active (positive) low beam terminal, and active high beam terminal, earth switched h4 connector has a common positive, and earth for low, and earth for high.

With H4 halogen globes, it does not matter as they work on earth-switched circuits or actively switched circuits. LED headlights fitted to earth-switched vehicles will need a set of polarity converters. Ask your auto electrician to check. *Tip: Sometimes you can tell by simply looking at the H4 plugs wires, usually actively switched vehicles wires have a solid colour, earth switched h4 wires have a coloured stripe on them.

Commonly Asked Questions:

Q.     Why don’t my new led headlights work on my Hilux or Landcruiser?

A.      It is probably earth switched and you will need polarity converters.

Q.     Why have my spotlights stopped working after fitting LED Headlights?

A.      You have probably fitted polarity converters to your headlights and changed the polarity for your spotlights, your auto electrician will have to re-relay it.

Q.     How do I check if my headlights are earth switched or actively switched?

A.      Best answer, ask your auto electrician. Some you can get an idea by seeing if the h4 plug on the car’s wires have a stripe of not, if you see a different colour stripe on the h4 wires it’s probably earth switched.

Q.     Where do I get polarity converters?

A.      Click the link below, make sure you add 2x pieces to the cart, not one.

https://www.pro-vision-lighting.com/polarity-converter

Q.     Where do I buy led headlights?

A.      Click the link below, make sure you add 2x pieces to the cart, unless it is a motorcycle, or you want 1x piece to test, or as a replacement, or a project for a quad bike etc..  ðŸ˜‰

https://www.pro-vision-lighting.com/led/led-headlights

Q.     Do I need load resistors?

A.      Some do, some do not, there are literally millions of different vehicles on the road. You will have to fit the lights up first and see. Load resistors are needed if the high beam light stays on all the time, or if it needs more load to activate the light, I have seen them bridged out across high and low beam wires or inline on the earth wire. Again… Save yourself a headache, get a professional to work it out.

Q. Why does my high beam light stay on after I have fitted led headlights?

A. LED lights use less power and produce more light, the resistance on some circuits needs to be the value of the filament in the halogen globe to work correctly on some applications. You will need to boost the Ohms on some circuits for the electrical system to work properly.

We advise that you get a qualified and competent automotive electrician to fit any of our lights, (technically this is required by law). We also advise that before buying any of our products you make sure you know that they will fit. Check the depth measurements in your bucket and the buckets taper and compare it to the led headlights measurements. Call us for advice first before purchasing or ask an auto electrician for advice before purchasing.

Also ask the auto electrician if you need to purchase any extras or if there will be any modifications needed. Such as re-wiring spotlights because they have been wired to suit earth switched vehicles' high beam trigger, or if it will be needing load resistors so that high beam light does not stay on all the time when you are on low beam, or if you need polarity converters for earth switched vehicles.

My best tip is to get a professional to fit your lights, they are qualified, you are not 😉

What’s the Difference Between ADR Approved and ADR Compliant?

ADR approved headlamps are Asymmetrical RHD, Right Hand Drive – For Australian Vehicles that have the steering wheel on the right side, and drive on the left-hand side of the road. You will see an Emark on them, (E9, E27 etc…), and other markings. Note: ADR approved headlamps must still be set up correctly by a professional so as not to be too high on low beam.

ADR Compliant headlights can be symmetrical headlamps that are set up correctly so low beam is not too glary or bright, have the relevant ECE certification, and are not aimed too high to impede drivers coming the other way, which will be according to the ADR regulations for passing beams. Basically, you don’t want them too high when set up the low beam passing side.

***Note: ECE Certification is a standard adopted by countries all over the world based on the regulations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. For headlamps, it means the lights have been tested and passed the requirements for visibility durability, safety, and reliability and other requirements. You will see an EMark on the lights that show which country the ECE certificate was submitted to and passed by. EMarks you will see on the glass of the headlamp such as E9, E27 etc… It does not matter which country the ECE certificate was passed in, for Symmetrical headlamps, to be able to be used on LHD or RHD vehicles, but it does matter for Asymmetrical headlamps. Asymmetrical headlamps will be made for either a dedicated RHD vehicle or a dedicated LHD vehicle.

What’s the difference between Asymmetrical and Symmetrical headlamps?

Asymmetrical headlamps have one light pattern angled up and the other side angled down. In Australia, the left is angled up and the right is angled down.

Modern Symmetrical headlamps have both beam patterns on each side horizontal, or flat across both sides on the low beam, they are also referred to as universal headlamps, left or right-hand drive compatible.

What vehicles use Asymmetrical Headlamps and what use Symmetrical Headlamps?

Modern vehicles use asymmetrical headlamps, older cars can have asymmetrical or symmetrical headlamps.

If you have ever gone to an auto shop and bought or seen the old sealed beam headlamps you get off the shelf, the are generally symmetrical, universal.

Vehicles like older Toyota Landcruiser’s, Toyota Hilux, Holden, a lot of motorcycles and trucks etc, use either 7” Round, 5 ¾” round, 4x6” rectangular, or 5x7” rectangular Symmetrical sealed beam halogen lights, universal, suitable for left hand or right-hand drive vehicles.

This is why you can get a old Jaguar, or a Jeep, or a Toyota, and replace the headlamps with aftermarket symmetrical universal headlamps no matter if the vehicle is made for the roads in the USA, or made for the roads in Australia, as they can still be set up so that the beam angle on either side can be used as a passing beam.

***Note: You will see headlamps with DOT on them as well, this is a USA requirement for their Department of Transport regulations. It is not required in Australia, but you will see it on universal headlamps so factories can sell them to Australia, and the USA.

Coming into 2020 there are a couple of new products on the market and a couple of old ones.
Of course, i may be a bit biased being the director of Pro Vision Lighting in Australia, but there are a few things to look that i have considered for 2019 and going into 2020 when it comes to led headlight globes.

I have looked at Stedi copperhead, Philips Ultinon (Not their extreme version), our Pro Vision Quick-Fit kit, our Extreme Series, and our New Extreme PLUS Series.

First of all, the Philips Luxeon Z ES chips are a definite winner, they have proved themselves over the last few years, and depending on how hard you drive them and which versions you get will determine the lumen/watt ratio.

A newcomer is the high intensity HML3 led's and a new Bridgelux led. The HML3 have proven to be a stayer in 2019 and we will keep them on in 2020 at a discounted price. The new bridgelux i suspect will be the best for 2020 as bridgelux in the USA have been around for a long time and have just as good a reputation as CREE and Philips.
So i am expecting big things from these new Extreme Plus LED Bulbs.

Another thing i have noticed in regards to the advancement of thermal management is that they are now going towards a hybrid style system whereby they are combining technologies they have been doing over the years, so that the can effectively put more powerful led's in their led conversion kits.

The only downside to the copper belts is that they are outdated and a bit suss on the safety side. Copper belts were first introduced around three years ago and have pretty much been phased out now by heat sinc and dissipation and better quality fans.
The problem with the old fans, (which came out in the first led headlight bulbs), is that they were noisy and if they failed, the led's would burn out.
Now the fans are noiseless, have a long lifespan (way longer than the actual kits), and they have coupled them with latest heat-sinc and dissipation engineering through the body.
This allows high powered led kits to have a much greater lifespan.
In a nutshell, you can now have much brighter led headlight bulbs that last for years.

There are a few companies bulbs i have not included in this blog to try and keep it short.
Like Narva and JW Speaker. To be honest, they are still selling the same bulbs they were a couple of years ago.
The Philips Ultinon are probably the best out of the lot in terms of being conservative and new, they stay well below their limits and obviously have the Philips price tag.
The Stedi copperhead are just too old now.
In the Pro Vision line, the quick-fit and the extreme series have performed very well in 2019 so we will keep them on for 2020 at affordable prices, and i am keen to see how the Extreme Plus series perform in 2020. Given that they are designed so well and use quality components like the Bridgelux led's, i expect not many kits will touch them for a couple of years.

Laser Lighting for Off-Road 4x4 Vehicles

LASER Headlamps & Laser Light Bars – Everything You Need to Know.

The latest in advanced engineering for off-road vehicles are the Hybrid Laser + LED Headlight and Light Bar technology.
Laser technology makes a huge improvement to the amount of distance you can get out of your spot-beam light, (around 1250mtrs), for headlamp lights, and for the light bars around 1LUX@ 900mtrs for the 14" Single Row, around 1600mtrs for the 50" Dual Row The added led's around the lights give you a spread of light across each side of the road for a full universal result for distance and width while driving at night. The lights come with everything you need for easy fitting, and the laser headlamps are available in a 5 3/4 inch and a 7 inch round, to suit a wide range of motorcycles, cars, and trucks that use a standard semi-sealed and sealed beam type of lamp housing, or they can be used in conjunction with the supplied mounting brackets for bull-bars as an auxiliary light.
The latest in headlights and lightbars for motoring enthusiasts have just arrived! Enjoy!
Check them out on the website here - Laser Headlamps,  Laser Light Bars.

Are Lasers Safe on the Eyes?

In short, yes. The Pro Vision Lighting Laser Headlamp are certified FDA EN 62471 approved, ( “laser illuminated projector” (LIP) ), to comply with the safety standards required for laser products used in indoor or outdoor cinema theatres, laser shows, presentations at conventions, as image/data projectors in an office setting, in a home, or in this case for auxiliary headlamps so that they are non-harmful to your eyes, (their optical design ensures that the beam of light does not dazzle or cause glare for other drivers).

Why are they Still using LED's with them?

As mentioned before, the laser part of the light is a spotlight type of beam to generate an enormous amount of beam distance, while the led's, (Top Grade CREE XM-L LED's for the Headlamp and German-made OSRAM for the light bar), are specifically engineered and seated in precision reflectors to light up the sides of the road for a better and safer field of vision while driving at night.

What are the benefits of using the Laser Headlights and Light Bars compared to halogen, HID, or LED?

Laser lights are approximately four times brighter than led and have around twice the amount of efficiency, (this is being conservative).
The benefits of integrating laser technology into auxiliary headlamps is that they generate an extremely high luminosity giving you a much longer visual array of Distance + the added visual area of Width with the led's.
Compared to halogen and HID?
To halogen, the laser is brighter, give better clarity of vision, last longer, and are more stable. Compared to HID, the laser is more stable, last longer, and will give you more distance.

Are They Waterproof?

The Pro Vision Laser Headlamp is rated IP68 water and dust-proof so that you can use them in a wide range of environments.
Whether you are in high or low altitudes, tropical or dry climates, the environmental protection for the laser light is built to handle any adventures you want to take them on.

What about Shock-proofing for the Laser Lights?

Each headlight and lightbar is built tough to withstand vibration and jarring.
Polycarbonate lenses, heavy-duty bracket assemblies, a heavy-duty lightweight housing, and vibration protected components inside the light ensure that no matter what rough terrain you take the lights through, they will stand up to anything that you can throw at them.

Do They Need a Special Relay Harness?

The laser headlamps and lightbars are electrically designed for 12v and 24v integration and will work with a vehicles standard 12v or 24v electrical system, the low current draw/high output of the lights ensures that the vehicles standard H4 H/L headlight connector, (for headlamps), is sufficient to run the lights, (H13 H/L, HB1 9004, and HB5 9007 adapters are available on request).
The laser headlamp lights are also easily interchangeable into an existing harness to upgrade your auxiliary lights if you prefer.
Note*** By law, we always advise you to get an auto electrician to fit the lights and check the ampere compatibility and switching system for best results.

What Colour Temperature is the Laser Headlamp?

The laser + led headlamp and light bar lights are around 5500k-5700k pure white, (Lasers utilize phosphor to get the pure white colour). This is around midday sunlight, and from what modern science tells us, this colour temperature is the best light that our eyes have evolved to, to best see the contrast of objects.
Keep in mind, everyone's' eyes are different and react differently to different colours, but technically speaking, the colour temperature of our laser headlight are the best colour temperature for you to be able to see clearly with at night.

Can i use them on Main Roads?

At this time we are classifying them all as suitable for "off-road only" use, as with new technology, we cannot guarantee them as ADR approved as the vehicle would have to get an engineering certificate in your state, and to our knowledge, none exist yet. Check out the following link for one of the better explanations we have seen concerning auxiliary lighting rules and regulations - Auxiliary Lighting Guidelines.

How to Buy Good HID Spotlights on a Budget

If you want to buy good HID Spotlights, but have a limited budget, then I will share a few tips on what to look out for.
The first thing is to check out the company that you’re interested in.
If you don’t want to pay for name-brand lights like Hella, look for a good local company that specialises in HID Spotlights and Driving Lights.
A good company will have been in business for more than a few years, which means you will get a good quality product, at a reasonable price, and they will have a good well established after sales service and support team.

The second thing to check is the quality of the housings.
You can get good quality ABS housings, and you can get Aluminium housings.
ABS is a plastic, but if the engineering in the plastic is not good, UV radiation from the sun will break down the material of the driving lights quickly and the housing will become brittle and crack.

HID Ballasts in Spotlights.
The HID Ballast is the heart and brain of the operation.
It controls the current draw from your vehicle (12v/24v) and converts it into high voltage to light up the xenon bulb.
The stability and quality of the ballast will gauge how long your xenon bulbs last, and how stable the current is, (cheaper ballasts will make bulbs flicker, ask the supplier if they are AC/DC compatible ballasts).

Xenon Bulbs in HID Lights.
Last but not least in this quick post is the hid bulbs.
First of all, make sure the bulbs are UV Cut, as in the ABS housings, Xenon bulbs that are UV Cut will eliminate harmful UV Radiation.
UV Cut xenon bulbs protect the reflectors and lenses from burning, melting, and becoming foggy.

Ok, that’s it for now, check out more detailed information on the website here -> https://www.pro-vision-lighting.com/hid-lights/hid-driving-lights-spot-lights-4x4-4wd-offroad

What’s the difference between Lux and Lumen #4 - LED Driving Lights & Spotlights.

What’s the difference between Lux and Lumen #4 - LED Driving Lights and Spotlights.

Ok, so we have covered a few different aspects and applications where the Lux and Lumen differ depending on the type of light.

And just to summarise the difference between Lux & Lumen, “LUX is the light intensity over an area, the lumen is the measured brightness of the light source, or, one lux is one lumen per square meter”.

Today I will focus on LED Spotlights and Driving Lights so you can get a better idea of which light will best suit your need.

There are a couple of factors to consider for driving lights and spotlights, The size of the light, The type of lens and reflector, The depth of the reflector, & The type of LED chip.

The Size of the Light.

Obviously, how much room you have will determine the size of the light you can fit. In saying this, bigger is better, as you will get more light coverage.
If you can only fit a smaller light on, the best one we have seen in the smaller sizes is the 5” 80W LED Driving Light.
It is not a pencil beam style light, but a driving beam, (around a 30 degree angle) and will give you distance and width and add twice as much than your high beams, and give you a maximum light efficacy (how much lumen gets through the lens), and maximum lux, (how much light area you get on the road).

The Type of Lens and Reflector

Generally, you will get three types of lenses and reflectors, an open style reflector, where the light source is directed by the reflector, an optical lens, optical lenses can be from the light source itself, and/or is projected like a magnifying glass forward out of the lens, and the last type is a hybrid lens.

Most modern led driving lights use hybrid lenses, (our 5” 80w LED Driving Lamp uses hybrid lenses).
A hybrid lens uses both optical lenses + reflectors to maximize the direction and amount of light that is directed onto the area in front of the vehicle, to give you the best lux of light.

This means a good hybrid lens will give you more lumen over a given area than a standard reflector style lens will.

The Type of Led

It really goes without saying that a CREE, Osram, or Phillips LED light-source will help give you a better lumen and lux of light when used correctly in your light.

In saying this, it is also the type of lens the led is using that will directly relate to how much light gets onto a given area.

For example, if I use a CREE XHP70 in a reflector style housing, because the CREE XHP70 is an optical led, it defeats the purpose of putting it onto a reflector, it would be much better being used in a “projector” lens.

Some companies still think, “lets put the brightest led in”, but it simply does not have any extra benefit, you need to deal with a company that has quality optical and lighting engineers to get the best lumen and lux from your light source.

The Depth of the Reflector

The last thing I will go over is the depth of the reflector.
The reflector these days is usually used as an added aid to the direction, distance, and beam angle of the light.

For example; In our Black Diamond 7” 135w LED Driving Lights, it has less amount of reflectors, but they are deeper and wider than a comparative light such as our 7” 140w LED Driving Light.

The Black Diamond 135w also use a different led than the 140w, the black diamond use a 15W USA Made Luminus LED, while the 140w use a 5W CREE XT-E LED.

So, how does this affect the lumen and lux?

You will get more distance out of the Black Diamond 135W (about 30% more) than you will the 140W, but you will get more light area with the 140W.
Horses for courses.

That’s it for today, give us a call or send us an email if you need more information.

What is the Difference between Lux and Lumen?

What is the Difference between Lux and Lumen?

What is the difference between lux and lumen?

There are a lot of ideas in the mind of a buyer about Lux and lumen in regard to how people view it when they want to buy one of the LED or HID lights in the list below, check out more detailed information on the web pages in the links below for the different type of light.
To put it simply, LUX is the light intensity over an area, the lumen is the measured brightness of the light source, or, one lux is one lumen per square meter.
For further technical reading have a look HERE
There are key differences in measuring lumen and lux of the products below. So that you get a better understanding of what you want to look for when you go to buy one of the following products, click on the links below for more specific information related to the products, including prices, and more detailed information related to the differences of lumen and lux of each product.
  1. LED Headlight Bulb Kits.
  2. LED Driving Lights.
  3. LED Headlights.
  4. LED Work Lights.
  5. LED Light Bars.
  6. HID Xenon Conversion Kit Upgrade Bulbs.
  7. HID Spot Lights, and HID Driving Lights.
All of these different types of lights vary greatly in the type of lenses, sizes, and qualities, and we have written information on how the lumen and lux are measured, or affected by each different type of light.
Here is a list of some key differences that will directly reflect the lumen and lux of each type of light, and why we have to break it down for you in each section on the website, (otherwise this would be a book, not a post ;)

How Lenses affect lux and lumen measurements?

Lenses and reflectors differ greatly, such as a small high beam spot reflector in a car, a projector lens headlight, a standard size euro beam reflector in a normal modern car, the size and depth of reflectors in driving lights and spotlights, the types of lenses of led headlights, the types of lenses and reflectors in light bars, beam angles of lights, and the spread of light.
These differences in lenses will affect the Lux of each type of light. They all vary significantly and will impact on how much light you get on the road or field, and where it is in terms of the area of light and the brightness of the light. This is why you need to know the real facts about the difference between lumen and lux in relation to the different types of lenses used in each light so that you have a more informed view of what you need for your application.

What's the "real" lumen of an led light?

We all want the best engineering, but remember, people lie, and people mislead.
I saw one product on EBay once claiming their led headlight bulb produced 20,000 lumen per bulb, and this was in 2017. This was a blatant lie, but consumers don't know this, and most think, "oh it’s brighter and cheaper, I'll buy that one and try it". They end up with a bulb that produces 1000 lumen and say, "led bulbs for headlights are rubbish", it is bad for the industry because you can get a high quality LED bulb that significantly enhances your vision at night, and so in most cases, they are a much safer option than standard halogen.
I can tell you honestly today coming into 2019, No LED Headlight bulb will have more than a "Technical Lumen" of 4000lm per bulb in a single beam (1x low beam light for example).
Our latest Can-Bus compatible led headlight bulb is one of the brightest, and it is only 3500LM per bulb, (7000 Lumen Low Beam (2x single beam bulbs), 7000 Lumen high beam. The total "technical" lumen when you have high and low beam on will be 14,000 lumen.
And in regards to driving lights, probably the best and brightest "LED Chip" we have seen used in driving lights are the specially designed 15W USA Made Luminus led's, (each led has a technical rating of 170 Lumen Per Watt) are used in our Black Diamond 7" Spot/Driving Lights.

How do the electronics affect the lumen and lux rating of a light?

The last thing I will mention in this post about how to interpret lumen and lux for driving lights, headlight bulbs, work lights, and light bars, is concerning the "real lumen and lux" of the lights.
The actual real lumen and lux of the above mentioned lights are governed largely by the electronics, thermal management technology, and the light efficacy of the product, (how much light gets through the Led's lens and the products lens, and onto the road).
Everyone uses technical lumen in the marketing these lights, but I can tell you that when you add up thermal management electronics, drivers, lenses, and all the other factors, you can halve it or more to get the real lumen of the product.
And the light area on the road? Or the lux measurement? Most suppliers measure at 1lux as a standard "go-to" in their charts, but in reality, the light you really see when your driving along that matters is around about 100lux.

LED Work Lights - The Best 4 Inch 50 Watt

I have seen a lot of small led work lights, but the best value for money is this 4" 50w led work light.

It is IP68 Rated (it truely is), has a military breather for high and low altitudes, the beam pattern is perfect (not scattered and patchy), and it has high vibratory stainless steel mounts.

At AUD$199.00 each, it is just as good as any $600.00 light in terms of quality and value for money.

We give it an AAA+.

The main problem we have seen with smaller cheaper led work lights is that they can get water in them when you put high pressure hoses on them, the led's camn start to dim dramatically over a short period of time, they start to fall apart from being on vehicles where there is a lot of vibration, and the beam patterns are scattered, patchy, and uneven..

This little 4" 50W is by far the best one we have seen for the money. You can easily pay three times the amount for an led light that has the same properties as mentioned above. Also, if you buy them in bulk you get more than a 50% discount.

Have a look at the detailed specifications on the website below, and let is know if you have any questions.

Tips for Installing High Powered HID Spot and Driving Lights.

Troubleshooting High Powered HID Lights

The relay harness and switch that come with high powered HID driving lights are built to generally be used without any modifications. Sometimes when fitters try to modify the relay harnesses of HID systems to come on when you hit your high beam, by adding a high beam adapter to the vehicles headlight plug, which a supplier may have provided, may cause problems.

We suggest that you consult your auto electrician, for HID lights over 35w or 55w, and if necessary get your auto electrician to make a custom harness for you. We have seen in some cases where trying to trigger high powered HID lights off a high beam headlight connector, by modifying the relay harness that comes with your HID lights, that are designed to be a "stand alone" switch and harness, can create problems when they start to modify them.

Because HID Spot lights draw a lot of current to start, we have noticed (even when some auto electricians fit them), that when you are trying to switch your high beams on, and also have the spot lights come on via the completion of the circuit of the high beam connector, it can create an anomaly on the system, (even when hooked up to the battery), and either one HID light will come on intermittently, or one or both won't come on at all. We have also noticed this on some vehicles when trying to put high powered HID kits in high beams alone, the allocation of power to the high beam lights seems incompatible (even if they add a relay), and getting back to the HID spot lights, even when they are powered directly off the battery, it seems that in some cases when you try to hook high powered HID spot lights up to high beam headlight connectors, and use the high beam headlight connector as a trigger for the spot lights, some vehicles systems don't like it.

A lot of people get frustrated with this, and once they test the ballast and bulb off a battery, and find they work, they are perplexed, (and we have seen some auto electricians become perplexed as they tell us the high beam headlight connector is simply acting as a "switch" and the power is being drawn directly from the battery).

Nevertheless, to save yourself a lot of trouble, either use the relay harness and switch that comes with the lights only, or if you are triggering them of high beam headlight connectors, we suggest talking to an auto electrician who has seen these problems before and understands high intensity discharge lighting. One solution we have seen is where they make up their own relay harnesses, and if triggering off high beam headlight connectors, they split each light to trigger off both high beam headlight connector, and not just one.

3 Tips on What to Check before you Upgrade Halogen Headlight Bulbs to LED or HID.

1. Headlight Bulbs Adapters.

On around 1% of vehicles headlight bulbs are fitted into an “adapter” before they are fitted into the headlight housing.
Normally, headlight bulbs sit directly into the headlight housing and are either held by a retaining clip or are pushed in and twisted in to lock into the headlight housing.
When you buy a led kit or hid kit, check how the bulb is retained in the headlight before you purchase them. If they need “headlight bulb adapters”, make sure your supplier gives you the bulb adapters for free with the kit, or has them available for purchase.

2. Bulb Type.

The best way to check the bulb type that your vehicle has in its headlights is to check your manual, call your dealer with the VIN number, or check to see if a part number is written on the bulb.
Some websites may not be accurate for the bulb type in your vehicle as they vary from country to country.
The most common bulb types will have part numbers such as H1, H3, H4, H7, H9, H11, HB3 9005, HB4 9006. If you call your dealer for the part number, make sure they give you this OEM number, and not their stock keeping number.

3. Can-Bus Decoders.

On vehicles that where your lights turn on automatically, you will need to get can-bus decoders.
Can-Bus is where your vehicles computer turns your lights automatically when you open the door, put the key in the ignition, or when you go through a dark tunnel and the lights switch on automatically.
Make sure when you buy a LED or HID headlight bulb kit your supplier has can-bus decoders available or has them available for purchase.

LED Bulbs for Headlights - What You Need to Know.

LED Headlight Bulbs are starting to flood the market and there are a few things you need to know before you buy them.
Below are a few tips on LED Bulbs that will be helpful, and we will concentrate on H7 LED Bulbs and H4 LED Headlight Bulbs.

H4 LED Bulbs for headlamps replace a "Double Filament" halogen bulb, and the H7 LED Headlamp Bulbs replace a "Single Filament" halogen bulb.

H4 LED Globes can also be called "H4 H/L LED Globes". The H/L denotes a High/Low beam, this is where one halogen bulb has two filaments in them serving to do both Low and High Beam in the one bulb.

H7 LED Globes replace the H7 halogen globes with a single filament, which denotes that the single beam does the job of one set of lights, either Low Beam, or High Beam. In other words you would need 4x bulbs to do both high and low beam.

Can-Bus LED Bulbs.
Can-Bus is a technical term for when the vehicles computer controls when to turn your lights on. This can be when you put your keys in the ignition and start the car, the headlight come on automatically without having to manually switch them on.
When you get an LED Conversion Kit to upgrade your bulbs from halogen to LED, you will need to make sure you get Can-Bus Decoders with the kit. This is so that the computer can recognize the lower wattage LED Bulbs you have put in the headlights, and will switch them on automatically and not give you an error code telling you that the bulbs blown.

LED Headlight Bulb Adapters.
On some vehicles, instead of having a normal metal retaining clip, the bulbs plug into a plastic or metal adapter, and then is secured in the headlight housing by the adapter.
You will need to check if you bulbs are held in by a normal retaining clip or an adapter before you purchase you led kit, and make sure that the supplier is able to provide you with the extra adapters to suit your vehicle.

Plug & Play LED Bulbs.
Some headlight bulb housings are small, and some led bulb kits can be too long, or too wide to be able to fit them easily in your car headlights. Make sure when you buy an led kit that you check out your headlight housing and then look at the dimensions of the led bulb kit that you have your eyes on so you can see if it will fit in easily.

Low Beam LED Headlight Bulbs for Projector Lights.
As i mentioned before about the difference between H4 and H7 bulbs, different led bulbs can react differently with different headlight reflectors.
A projector style headlight is a small "fish-eye" style light that gives you good cut-offs and most led globes are made for "reflector" style headlights.
If you buy led headlight bulbs for projector lenses, make sure you get them from a supplier who makes led bulbs for projector lenses. this is so that they react correctly with the projector lens and still give you more light and good beam cut-offs.
