How to Buy Good HID Spotlights on a Budget

If you want to buy good HID Spotlights, but have a limited budget, then I will share a few tips on what to look out for.
The first thing is to check out the company that you’re interested in.
If you don’t want to pay for name-brand lights like Hella, look for a good local company that specialises in HID Spotlights and Driving Lights.
A good company will have been in business for more than a few years, which means you will get a good quality product, at a reasonable price, and they will have a good well established after sales service and support team.

The second thing to check is the quality of the housings.
You can get good quality ABS housings, and you can get Aluminium housings.
ABS is a plastic, but if the engineering in the plastic is not good, UV radiation from the sun will break down the material of the driving lights quickly and the housing will become brittle and crack.

HID Ballasts in Spotlights.
The HID Ballast is the heart and brain of the operation.
It controls the current draw from your vehicle (12v/24v) and converts it into high voltage to light up the xenon bulb.
The stability and quality of the ballast will gauge how long your xenon bulbs last, and how stable the current is, (cheaper ballasts will make bulbs flicker, ask the supplier if they are AC/DC compatible ballasts).

Xenon Bulbs in HID Lights.
Last but not least in this quick post is the hid bulbs.
First of all, make sure the bulbs are UV Cut, as in the ABS housings, Xenon bulbs that are UV Cut will eliminate harmful UV Radiation.
UV Cut xenon bulbs protect the reflectors and lenses from burning, melting, and becoming foggy.

What’s the difference between Lux and Lumen #4 - LED Driving Lights and Spotlights.

Ok, so we have covered a few different aspects and applications where the Lux and Lumen differ depending on the type of light.

And just to summarise the difference between Lux & Lumen, “LUX is the light intensity over an area, the lumen is the measured brightness of the light source, or, one lux is one lumen per square meter”.

Today I will focus on LED Spotlights and Driving Lights so you can get a better idea of which light will best suit your need.

There are a couple of factors to consider for driving lights and spotlights, The size of the light, The type of lens and reflector, The depth of the reflector, & The type of LED chip.

The Size of the Light.


Obviously, how much room you have will determine the size of the light you can fit. In saying this, bigger is better, as you will get more light coverage.
If you can only fit a smaller light on, the best one we have seen in the smaller sizes is the 5” 80W LED Driving Light.
It is not a pencil beam style light, but a driving beam, (around a 30 degree angle) and will give you distance and width and add twice as much than your high beams, and give you a maximum light efficacy (how much lumen gets through the lens), and maximum lux, (how much light area you get on the road).

The Type of Lens and Reflector


Generally, you will get three types of lenses and reflectors, an open style reflector, where the light source is directed by the reflector, an optical lens, optical lenses can be from the light source itself, and/or is projected like a magnifying glass forward out of the lens, and the last type is a hybrid lens.

Most modern led driving lights use hybrid lenses, (our 5” 80w LED Driving Lamp uses hybrid lenses).
A hybrid lens uses both optical lenses + reflectors to maximize the direction and amount of light that is directed onto the area in front of the vehicle, to give you the best lux of light.

This means a good hybrid lens will give you more lumen over a given area than a standard reflector style lens will.


The Type of Led


It really goes without saying that a CREE, Osram, or Phillips LED light-source will help give you a better lumen and lux of light when used correctly in your light.

In saying this, it is also the type of lens the led is using that will directly relate to how much light gets onto a given area. 

For example, if I use a CREE XHP70 in a reflector style housing, because the CREE XHP70 is an optical led, it defeats the purpose of putting it onto a reflector, it would be much better being used in a “projector” lens.

Some companies still think, “lets put the brightest led in”, but it simply does not have any extra benefit, you need to deal with a company that has quality optical and lighting engineers to get the best lumen and lux from your light source.


The Depth of the Reflector


The last thing I will go over is the depth of the reflector.
The reflector these days is usually used as an added aid to the direction, distance, and beam angle of the light.

For example; In our Black Diamond 7” 135w LED Driving Lights, it has less amount of reflectors, but they are deeper and wider than a comparative light such as our 7” 140w LED Driving Light.

The Black Diamond 135w also use a different led than the 140w, the black diamond use a 15W USA Made Luminus LED, while the 140w use a 5W CREE XT-E LED.

So, how does this affect the lumen and lux?

You will get more distance out of the Black Diamond 135W (about 30% more) than you will the 140W, but you will get more light area with the 140W.

What is the difference between lux and lumen?

There are a lot of ideas in the mind of a buyer about Lux and lumen in regard to how people view it when they want to buy one of the LED or HID lights in the list below, check out more detailed information on the web pages in the links below for the different type of light.
To put it simply, LUX is the light intensity over an area, the lumen is the measured brightness of the light source, or, one lux is one lumen per square meter.

There are key differences in measuring lumen and lux of the products below. How Lenses affect lux and lumen measurements?

Lenses and reflectors differ greatly, such as a small high beam spot reflector in a car, a projector lens headlight, a standard size euro beam reflector in a normal modern car, the size and depth of reflectors in driving lights and spotlights, the types of lenses of led headlights, the types of lenses and reflectors in light bars, beam angles of lights, and the spread of light.
These differences in lenses will affect the Lux of each type of light. They all vary significantly and will impact on how much light you get on the road or field, and where it is in terms of the area of light and the brightness of the light. This is why you need to know the real facts about the difference between lumen and lux in relation to the different types of lenses used in each light so that you have a more informed view of what you need for your application.

What's the "real" lumen of an led light?

We all want the best engineering, but remember, people lie, and people mislead.
I saw one product on EBay once claiming their led headlight bulb produced 20,000 lumen per bulb, and this was in 2017. This was a blatant lie, but consumers don't know this, and most think, "oh it’s brighter and cheaper, I'll buy that one and try it". They end up with a bulb that produces 1000 lumen and say, "led bulbs for headlights are rubbish", it is bad for the industry because you can get a high quality LED bulb that significantly enhances your vision at night, and so in most cases, they are a much safer option than standard halogen.
I can tell you honestly today coming into 2019, No LED Headlight bulb will have more than a "Technical Lumen" of 4000lm per bulb in a single beam (1x low beam light for example).
Our latest Can-Bus compatible led headlight bulb is one of the brightest, and it is only 3500LM per bulb, (7000 Lumen Low Beam (2x single beam bulbs), 7000 Lumen high beam. The total "technical" lumen when you have high and low beam on will be 14,000 lumen.
And in regards to driving lights, probably the best and brightest "LED Chip" we have seen used in driving lights are the specially designed 15W USA Made Luminus led's, (each led has a technical rating of 170 Lumen Per Watt) are used in our Black Diamond 7" Spot/Driving Lights.

How do the electronics affect the lumen and lux rating of a light?

The last thing I will mention in this post about how to interpret lumen and lux for driving lights, headlight bulbs, work lights, and light bars, is concerning the "real lumen and lux" of the lights.
The actual real lumen and lux of the above mentioned lights are governed largely by the electronics, thermal management technology, and the light efficacy of the product, (how much light gets through the Led's lens and the products lens, and onto the road).
Everyone uses technical lumen in the marketing these lights, but I can tell you that when you add up thermal management electronics, drivers, lenses, and all the other factors, you can halve it or more to get the real lumen of the product.
And the light area on the road? Or the lux measurement? Most suppliers measure at 1lux as a standard "go-to" in their charts, but in reality, the light you really see when your driving along that matters is around about 100lux.

LED Work Lights - The Best 4 Inch 50 Watt

I have seen a lot of small led work lights, but the best value for money is this 4" 50w led work light.

It is IP68 Rated (it truely is), has a military breather for high and low altitudes, the beam pattern is perfect (not scattered and patchy), and it has high vibratory stainless steel mounts.

Tips for Installing High Powered HID Spot and Driving Lights.

Troubleshooting High Powered HID Lights

The relay harness and switch that come with high powered HID driving lights are built to generally be used without any modifications. Sometimes when fitters try to modify the relay harnesses of HID systems to come on when you hit your high beam, by adding a high beam adapter to the vehicles headlight plug, which a supplier may have provided, may cause problems.

We suggest that you consult your auto electrician, for HID lights over 35w or 55w, and if necessary get your auto electrician to make a custom harness for you. We have seen in some cases where trying to trigger high powered HID lights off a high beam headlight connector, by modifying the relay harness that comes with your HID lights, that are designed to be a "stand alone" switch and harness, can create problems when they start to modify them.

Because HID Spot lights draw a lot of current to start, we have noticed (even when some auto electricians fit them), that when you are trying to switch your high beams on, and also have the spot lights come on via the completion of the circuit of the high beam connector, it can create an anomaly on the system, (even when hooked up to the battery), and either one HID light will come on intermittently, or one or both won't come on at all. We have also noticed this on some vehicles when trying to put high powered HID kits in high beams alone, the allocation of power to the high beam lights seems incompatible (even if they add a relay), and getting back to the HID spot lights, even when they are powered directly off the battery, it seems that in some cases when you try to hook high powered HID spot lights up to high beam headlight connectors, and use the high beam headlight connector as a trigger for the spot lights, some vehicles systems don't like it.

A lot of people get frustrated with this, and once they test the ballast and bulb off a battery, and find they work, they are perplexed, (and we have seen some auto electricians become perplexed as they tell us the high beam headlight connector is simply acting as a "switch" and the power is being drawn directly from the battery).

Nevertheless, to save yourself a lot of trouble, either use the relay harness and switch that comes with the lights only, or if you are triggering them of high beam headlight connectors, we suggest talking to an auto electrician who has seen these problems before and understands high intensity discharge lighting. One solution we have seen is where they make up their own relay harnesses, and if triggering off high beam headlight connectors, they split each light to trigger off both high beam headlight connector, and not just one.

3 Tips on What to Check before you Upgrade Halogen Headlight Bulbs to LED or HID.

1. Headlight Bulbs Adapters.

On around 1% of vehicles headlight bulbs are fitted into an “adapter” before they are fitted into the headlight housing.
Normally, headlight bulbs sit directly into the headlight housing and are either held by a retaining clip or are pushed in and twisted in to lock into the headlight housing.
When you buy a led kit or hid kit, check how the bulb is retained in the headlight before you purchase them. If they need “headlight bulb adapters”, make sure your supplier gives you the bulb adapters for free with the kit, or has them available for purchase.

2. Bulb Type.

The best way to check the bulb type that your vehicle has in its headlights is to check your manual, call your dealer with the VIN number, or check to see if a part number is written on the bulb.
Some websites may not be accurate for the bulb type in your vehicle as they vary from country to country.
The most common bulb types will have part numbers such as H1, H3, H4, H7, H9, H11, HB3 9005, HB4 9006. If you call your dealer for the part number, make sure they give you this OEM number, and not their stock keeping number.

3. Can-Bus Decoders.

On vehicles that where your lights turn on automatically, you will need to get can-bus decoders.
Can-Bus is where your vehicles computer turns your lights automatically when you open the door, put the key in the ignition, or when you go through a dark tunnel and the lights switch on automatically.
Make sure when you buy a LED or HID headlight bulb kit your supplier has can-bus decoders available or has them available for purchase.

LED Bulbs for Headlights - What You Need to Know.

LED Headlight Bulbs are starting to flood the market and there are a few things you need to know before you buy them.
Below are a few tips on LED Bulbs that will be helpful, and we will concentrate on H7 LED Bulbs and H4 LED Headlight Bulbs.

H4 LED Bulbs for headlamps replace a "Double Filament" halogen bulb, and the H7 LED Headlamp Bulbs replace a "Single Filament" halogen bulb.

H4 LED Globes can also be called "H4 H/L LED Globes". The H/L denotes a High/Low beam, this is where one halogen bulb has two filaments in them serving to do both Low and High Beam in the one bulb.

H7 LED Globes replace the H7 halogen globes with a single filament, which denotes that the single beam does the job of one set of lights, either Low Beam, or High Beam. In other words you would need 4x bulbs to do both high and low beam.

Can-Bus LED Bulbs.
Can-Bus is a technical term for when the vehicles computer controls when to turn your lights on. This can be when you put your keys in the ignition and start the car, the headlight come on automatically without having to manually switch them on.
When you get an LED Conversion Kit to upgrade your bulbs from halogen to LED, you will need to make sure you get Can-Bus Decoders with the kit. This is so that the computer can recognize the lower wattage LED Bulbs you have put in the headlights, and will switch them on automatically and not give you an error code telling you that the bulbs blown.

LED Headlight Bulb Adapters.
On some vehicles, instead of having a normal metal retaining clip, the bulbs plug into a plastic or metal adapter, and then is secured in the headlight housing by the adapter.
You will need to check if you bulbs are held in by a normal retaining clip or an adapter before you purchase you led kit, and make sure that the supplier is able to provide you with the extra adapters to suit your vehicle.

Plug & Play LED Bulbs.
Some headlight bulb housings are small, and some led bulb kits can be too long, or too wide to be able to fit them easily in your car headlights. Make sure when you buy an led kit that you check out your headlight housing and then look at the dimensions of the led bulb kit that you have your eyes on so you can see if it will fit in easily.

Low Beam LED Headlight Bulbs for Projector Lights.
As i mentioned before about the difference between H4 and H7 bulbs, different led bulbs can react differently with different headlight reflectors.
A projector style headlight is a small "fish-eye" style light that gives you good cut-offs and most led globes are made for "reflector" style headlights.
If you buy led headlight bulbs for projector lenses, make sure you get them from a supplier who makes led bulbs for projector lenses. this is so that they react correctly with the projector lens and still give you more light and good beam cut-offs.

LED Headlight Bulbs for Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles.



Retrofitting LED Headlamp Bulbs as a replacement for halogen bulbs in car headlights are becoming popular with car enthusiasts and people wanting a brighter light with no modifications.

To get a nice white headlight beam effect, without too much work and at a reasonable cost, you can get a plug and play led headlight bulb kit that gives you a nice white light that you fit easily yourself with a little bit of mechanical experience.

Some things to look out for before you go ahead and purchase some led lights for your car.

1. Check what bulb you have in it. 

The best way to work out your bulb is, is to check your cars operations manual, call your manufacturer with your VIN number, check if the bulb in your car has a part number on it, or look them up online.
Looking them up online is not always the best option because a vehicle in the USA might be a different type that is sent to Australia or the UK.

It is always best to look in your manual or call the manufacturer with your VIN number.
Note** If you call your dealer, ask for the OEM part number, not their own part number.

2. Are Your Lights Can-Bus Controlled?
Some vehicles like Audi or some VW have an automatic lighting system. This is where the cars computer controls when the lights and they come on automatically, when it gets dark or you go through a tunnel, or when you turn the car on.

If you do have automatic lights, you will need to make sure that you get can-bus decoders.
Can-Bus means "Controller Area Network", this is a fancy way of saying that your computer controls the lights.
Note*** If you have 50-watt resistors, you can trick your car into thinking that the lights are still halogen. When you upgrade the standard halogen bulbs to led, in vehicles which have a can-bus system, they draw less current, and the computer thinks your bulb is blown or not there.

3. Does the bulb have standard fitting? Or does it need adapters with the kit?
Some cars have headlight bulb adapters instead of the normal metal spring retaining clips. Check your bulb or ask your local auto electrician to check for you before you buy a led headlight kit.

4. How do i tell a good seller from a dodgy seller?
Check how long the company has been in business and specializing in led headlight bulbs, and check that they are not the cheapest you can buy.
A good company will have a proven after sales service and support system if they have been around for a long time, so check how much experience they have in the industry.
And you will be better off paying more for a high-quality kit, then find that a few months later you have just thrown away your money.
It most countries, you will have a standard warranty period which is required by the law.
If you are buying internationally, make sure they will give you a warranty if you need it.

5. Look out for hidden costs. 
If you need to pay for can-bus decoders, headlight adapters or any extras, with a good quality company they should be a Free optional extra.
Companies can be a bit deceiving in what it really costs to get you up and running, so look at for hidden costs. If you buy led headlight bulbs internationally be aware that in most countries you will have to pay customs and duty taxes.

LED Light Bars - Tips for Buying

LED Light Bars, where do we start!

Well... without going through all the pros and cons, i will just put a couple of things down and a few of our recommendations.

First of all, suppliers lie, i checked some Stedi images on their website and i seriously don't know how they get away fooling the public. They have the same images for totally different lights, and power ratings, anyway...the point is, it is hard to find out if what you see is actually what you get, once the buyer buys a product, unless they are really un-happy about what they have received then they generally won't complain. And don't let the Stedi brand fool you "Made In China Mate".

Getting onto more about which light-bars i think are really good, if i am to be honest, right now, i think there are only two worth buying out of the thousands of Chinese ones, and Yes we put our own brand on them too :), (we also have 20+yrs experience in the auto electrical industry, and know all the major companies in China).

The first one is the ones we call The Extreme Series. Beware of the fake ones, the real ones use 3w CREE, the fake ones use 1.5w china-brand and tell everyone they are CREE.
The other ones are our Pro Series LED Light Bars.

Forget about the super slim 5w, and all the rest, unless you have really tight restrictions in the height of the light bar you can use, they are a serious waste of money in terms of light output, the evenness of the beam patterns, and environmental protection. We have a large range here -> LED Light Bars, but putting them on my own vehicle, either the Extreme Series or the Pro Series are the best.

In terms of biggest bang for buck, the extreme will give you distance, width, and the all important depth, (the area directly in front of the car and projecting out as far as possible).
In terms of quality, the Pro Series come from a factory that has been there from the beginning, the optics, beam pattern, environmental protection, how long the last before the led's start to fade and lose light, heat-sink, components and circuit boards , everything in these lights are 100% quality, and the 10W CREE LED's are real, not fake.

We use the Luminus LED's in our 7" 135W LED Driving Lights and our 9" 180W LED Driving Lights. The Luminus LED's are a 15W LED. These lights  are specially designed for distance, but they also have a combination driving light cover that comes with the lights for free.

In regards to "what is the brightest led driving lights on the market?", don't be fooled by the stuff you read on EBay about 700w led driving lights etc... it is garbage.
Righ now, as of October 2017, the brightest you can get are the 370w 5D Hyrbid LED Driving Lights. If there was anything brighter, then we would have them.

LED Headlights - For Motorcycles, Cars, & Trucks

A few questions i get relating to LED Headlamps are about legalities and about how easier are they to fit.

To answer the first question, lights for cars and trucks have a left hand headlight and a right hand headlight. In Australia ADR are are for beam cut-offs and brightness. This is mainly applied to low beams for passing traffic, so they don't get dazzled and run off the road.
Most LED Headlights are now made as a universal headlight that conforms to the beam cut-off points for low beam on both right and left hand side of the road, thus the "universal" moniker. The other thing with ADR is the DOT SAE E-Mark that needs to be displayed on the lights glass.

All our led headlights are universal for low beam and have the E-MARK DOT and SAE markings.

How easy are they to fit? generally they are simple, and an easy plug and play unit. They are modeled off universal halogen headlights, 7", 4x6", 5x7", 5 3/4 etc... So you simply pull the old halogen light out, and put the new led light in. The plugs are also standard, H4 H/L, or H13, or single beam power and earth.

A lot of guys use the 7" LED Headlights on Jeeps, other cars, and a lot of Trucks.
And for Motorcycles, the also use 7" and also 5 3/4 inch LED Headlights for some bikes like Harley Davidson.
My favorite in the 7" Round Headlight are the 75w Pro Lights that we supply, or the 105w 7" LED Headlamps.
For Trucks we use the 5x7" LED headlights or the 4x6" LED headlight replacements.

Motorcycles led headlights are also popular, in the 7" you can't go past the 75w Pro lights above, or if you have a 5/34 Inch housing, we have found these led headlights the best.
Another motorcycle led headlamp that is getting a lot of notice is the 7" Round Self Leveling LED Headlight, or Auto-Cornering headlight. This light is gravity sensitive and levels as you go around corners for better illumination where you need it the most.

LED Work Lights

Buying LED Work Lights for Tractors, Mining Machinery, Boats, or for general working environments can be a bit of a mine field.

The main issues you can face is the the distance of the light beam, the width of the light beam, the depth of light, and the size of the light or any weight restrictions you may have.
Another issue is vibration resistance and water/dust proofing properties.

Most work lights for the farming industry use lights for lighting up small areas such as bins, or for lighting up larger areas for seeding and harvesting.
For smaller areas anywhere from 20w - 40w lights will be enough, such as the 20 4" Work Lights, or or 40w Work Lights.

For medium range, anywhere from 60w-120w are great, ( 60w LED Work Lights, 120w LED Work Lights).

The Best LED Bulb Conversion Kit Upgrades

LED Conversion Kits can be difficult to choose for a number of reasons. With so many products now on the market it is important to do your research and talk to specialists to gain a better understanding of exactly what will best suit your particular application.
The latest kits will use the CREE XHP50, CREE XHP70, Philips Luxeon Z-ES GEN 2, and the new CSP LED's.
Then you need to look at your headlight housing to see which kit is best for you. Projector headlights will need a specialized kit to give you the best beam cut-offs, (see projector lens led headlight bulb kits) whereas a high beam or driving light/spot light may be better suited to using the Extreme Series led kits.
For motorcycles led kits use the ATOM LED Conversion kits as they have built-in-drivers which means that they are easier to fit because there are no external drivers to have to mount, they just plug straight into your existing headlight connector.
For those on a budget, try the Trailblazer led kits, they are still powerful, easy to fit, and high quality.

The combination of power, beam pattern technology, thermal management, and advanced electronics come into play in a big way and cannot be easily detected by simply seeing slick marketing and cheap prices.
For example a lot can be said negatively around using fans in led kits, but if they are good quality, and are well engineered in conjunction with other thermal management systems, such as conduction and failure safe guards, they can actually add quality to the led headlight bulbs over-all life and function.
In saying this, as technology advances, a lot of high quality kits now use conduction primarily in the body of the led bulb, and this can be advantageous regarding the size of the bulb and makes them easier to fit in small headlight housings.

Price is a factor. Even our cheapest kit, ( the V8 Series) although having fans, are carefully selected to have a high quality and long life in the harshest conditions. But in the end, the old saying "you get what you pay for" rings true.
For example; The X8 Pro kits are in my opinion the best all-round led headlight bulb on the market today. The reason for this is that they can be used in pretty much every headlight, no matter the size and type and still give you great beam cut-offs, and the beam is 360 degree rotatable so that you can have full adjust-ability to get the beam pattern perfect. The LED's are second gen Luxeon z-es so they have high lumen and long life. The conduction is in the body and have been beautifully engineered right down to the molecular structure (kind of like a spiral) to create the best conduction, and the size of the bulb will perfectly fit into any headlight housing without you having to do any modifications.

If you have a Can-Bus controlled vehicle, which means the computer turns the lights on automatically, get the Can-Bus LED Kits, these kits are the latest and greatest in terms of the ability to fit any vehicle no matter if it is can-bus controlled or not.
